In spite of the insitence of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua on the pursuance of due process and rule of law to re-position the nation and its economy Idumange John in this write-up pointed out that emphasis on the rule of law alone cannot bring the nation out of the stagnation and mediocrity foisted on the masses by the past dictators.
It is far far from the truth that there was the preaching of Maxist-Leninism in Nigeria in the 70,s. The government of Gowon leaned more to the West than to the Soviets though it awarded some projects to Russia to show some neutrality. The administration of Muritala Muhammed/Obasanjo was not involved with any ideology but tried to eliminate the pockets of corruption and indiscipline that developed towards the end of Gowon's administration. Also with respect to privatization during the last Obasanjo's administration, the article or the writer is either displaying pure ignorance or complete lack of understanding of the real intended goal of the program or he is being unpatriotically mischievous. It is well known that most of the important corporations that serve as the cornerstone for the economy of the country, like NEPA, the Nigerian Railways, The Nigerian airways, NNPC, Ajaokuta Steel Mills etc. were either completely destroyed or were in very deplorable situation in 1999 when Obasanjo took over. These corporations were being run aground by the Nigerian inept managers and of course with contributions by former rulers. As practised in other developed or developing countries of the world, PRIVATIZATION is a solution that has been the recouse for such corporations. Furthermore, it is known that in some African countries that had doubts about privatization, the US was putting an enormous amount of pressure to force them to privatize. So, the interpretation the writer gives to Obasanjo's privatization efforts is VERY INCORRECT. However, I agree that the leadership in the country HAS TO CHANGE THE COURSE. The course being followed by President Yar'Adua at present is not helping the country and will NOT HELP. POSITIVE AND PRAGMATIC ACTION IS NEEDED, TALKING OF RULE OF LAW IS ABSOLUTELY INADEQUATE!
