Uganda is East Africa's biggest producer of the Cannabis plant, commonly known as Marijuana, the head of the Anti Narcotics Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department has said.
the article states that "Smoking or chewing Marijuana is the main cause of mental disorders which are soaring at an alarmingly high rate in the country".
I suppose that above statement is related to alleged link between cannabis and schizophrenia.
However, the risk of schizophrenia to those without mental health issues is less than 0.004%. Those that do have predeposition to mental health problems (~10% of cannabis users) the risk is increased to 0.1% which drops to 0.03% after the age of 20.
Compare that to the risk of serious brain damage from binge drinking being at around 30% and the risk of defected brain development caused by smoking tobacco being at 60% for under 25 year olds.
Cannabis is soft compared to legal drugs, so why so much tax money is spent on a failing policy of prevention and criminalising?
"Smoking or chewing Marijuana is the main cause of mental disorders which are soaring at an alarmingly high rate in the country." Ignorance never fails to amuse me.
