Nigeria: We Want Information Bill Not Probe Panels - Leadership

For those who wish to go to equity, they should, or did you say must, go with clean hands? And for others who also wish to point accusing fingers on people, they should know that while one finger is pointed at their targets, the other four are comfortably pointed at them. There is nobody especially in Nigeria that you will sweep his house and not get sand, nobody. That is why when you live in a ...

With these entire hullabaloo about probe panels etcetera and the approach and findings thus far, it is becoming clear that these charade is another waste of tax payers’ money that need to stop henceforth. The motive I can infer is nothing short of discrediting the past government of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and everything he stood for.

When will Nigerians learn to criticize objectively without bias? When would we start to commend our past and present leaders when they do well while pointing out areas needing improvement/. In my honest appraisal of the government of OBJ, I would say he did his very best for our great country. He laid the foundation and structure for successive government to build upon and need some praises for that. I agree that in the wee hours of his administration, some decisions were made that fell short of our expectation, he is only human.

That takes me to the topic of discussion, which is the sudden death of the FOI Bill. It is shocking that the same house that is in the vanguard of probity in governance to be the same one that would kill such a vital instrument of probity is to say the least is shocking. The other day I read one of the Leaders of the lower house saying that the functions of the house are in order of priority are 1) To perform oversight function over other arms of government and 3) To make laws, I can't remember the second one now. What a misplaced priority!

The legislature which comprises of the Senate and House of Assembly is one of the main organs of government, the others being the Executive and the Judiciary has become the weak link in the chain of good governance in Nigeria. When they should be making laws for the governance of the land, they are engaging in all manner of shadow chasing, padding the budget to take care of them or calling for the arrest of Governments officials that are not available to welcome them on site visits. Let it be said that there are few experienced and knowledgeable members of the house but many others shouldn't be there in the first place.

Nigerians need leaders that have their interest uppermost in their heart when they make decisions affecting them. The Executive arm of government under the servant leadership of Yaradua is championing this cause and we need the legislature like the judiciary to live up to its calling. We need true representatives and not ones with stolen mandates. And if you ask my suggestion, I would say sack them all and ask INEC to order fresh elections to fill their place with honourable people.
