Zimbabwe: Small Scale Farmers Seen As Backbone of Food Security - UN Integrated Regional Information Networks

A crop forecast by the Zimbabwean government that this year's maize production will fall short of the national requirement by about one million metric tonnes is leading to a reassessment of the role of communal farmers in guaranteeing the country's food security.

If at all our critiquing of Mugabe regime is genuinely meant to be tools to help in improving the welfare of Zimbawean people, then there is no need to be throwing stones at every issue that passes along the discussion pathway.

A case in point is the land issue and the gradual decline in output from the Zimbabwean agricultural fields. To suggest that the Fast track land reform is the sole cause is being mean with the truth. Yes it could have played its part, but there are a number of other factors which contributed including, among others; - The natural disasters like droughts which have plagued southern africa. If a country's economy is heavily dependent on agriculture,a single drought year has ripple effects on the following and subsequent seasons. Farmers depend on the money accrued from the the farming. -General rise of costs of farming, which the are being experienced the world over.

So when the world is trying to help Zimbabwe,in which ever way,let the ideas be objective. Patadzwa ngatitaurei asi kwete kungoti dzese nedzafa nedzafa dzoga hanzi dza dzvinywa naKirebi.

I think it is a misconception that the land reform did not result in the current disaster in food security in Zimbabwe. First there is the chronological relationship, secondly other current in the immediate vicinity of Zimbabwe(who share the same weather pattern) are producing good harvests. The land reform (or whatever it should be called) destroyed the supporting infracture supplied by large scale commercial farming, as described in the article.

I spent some time in Checheche and was impressed by the small scale production of cotton. I believe Zimbabwe should promote the small scale farmers by researching methods of increasing their productivity as current methods were mostly developed for larger scale farming. There are several benefits to promoting scale scale farming which I may expand on in further articles.

At this point in time, I am convinced neither Mugabe nor Zanu-PF are capable of taking Zimbabwe forward.
