For the past three weeks, the average power supply to all parts of the country has dropped to less than five hours a day. Power supply from the Egbin Thermal Station with the capacity for 1,350 megawatts is reported to have dropped to less than 800 MW due to a combination of inadequate gas supply and ill-maintenance.

Knowng the cripling effects on the economy and that in many cases the lack of supply is due to the lack of gas to feed the power plants, one would have expected a pragmatic minister of energy to get the vandalized pipelines repaired immediately at any cost to eliminate some of the black- outs. With such an administration and energy minister, firm dates for the repairs of vandalized gas pipes should be obtained from contractors and with such dates, a firm commitments should be made to the country as to when more power would be added to the grid. However, it was pointed out in some artcles in the papers that the administration has refused to pay contractors for some of the projects already completed and consequently, it will be very difficult to ask such contractors who might have had some of their properties confisticated by the banks to carry out any quick repairs of vandalized pipelines. So, the citizens have to continue to suffer.
