South Africa: Maize - the Unaffordable Staple (UN Integrated Regional Information Networks)

With global high food prices apparently here to stay, economists in South Africa warn that despite a bumper maize harvest, worldwide demand and soaring agricultural input prices mean that even maize-meal, the country's staple, could be off the menu.

Like the price of fuel, the price of maize is not going to come down any time soon. The solution to both shortages is to look at what you have too much of, and find a way to exploit it. I suggest that you start with aquatic weeds. There's food and biomass by the megaton in those swamps.
