Zimbabwe: Follow Botswana, Isolate Mugabe - Mmegi/The Reporter

I do not know who Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe was representing when he, as he normally does, shamelessly gate-crashed the African Union (AU) summit in Egypt last week.

My apologies for my last sentence; it should have read, "Mugabe needs strong measures to get him out of power" and not out of people.

The fool takes fiction as fact. Perhaps this why Mugabe is insane

I agree with the author. Mugabe is no longer the Zimbabwean President. That election was a sham. The result of the election reflects the fear of the Zimbabweans and not their genuine expressions. How could Mugabe double his vote to get to 2.1 million votes in a free and fair run off? What it essentially means is 50% of the vote Mugabe claims (1,050,000 votes) belongs to Tsvangirai. Add to that the 233,ooo votes Tsvangirai got, the 131,000 spolt ballots and the many more who boycotted the election, it becomes clear that Tsvangirai would have won the election if it was free and fair. The AU position is very regrettable as it sends a wrong signal to the outside world and as it enfringes on the rights of the majority of Zimbabweans to freely choose their leaders. It sets a bad precedent for the future of the continent as one sitting African president can use fraud and violence to 'win' an 'election' and expect the AU to pass a similar verdict. The AU resolution was an act of great betrayal to the suffering people of Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans do not deserve Mugabe (whom they fear and loathe very much) even for one more day. The AU should bite the bullet and call a spade, a spade; the spade we have can not be a shovel; Zimbabweans want Tsvangirai, their shovel and not Mugabe, who is now a spade. If the AU leaders maintain their stance, I suggest the wide world should disrespect them. They do not deserve any respect and their integrity and creditability is questionable. How long shall the AU continue to allow leaders who violate the constitutionally enshrined rights of their citizens to sit on high table with them? Aren't these AU leaders ashamed of themselves to allow such brutal leaders like Mugabe and Kibbaki to dine with them, when they know that they do not enjoy the approval of their own people, whom they are ruling against their own wishes? If the AU remains such a worthless organisation like its predecessor the OAU, it would be in the best interests of most Africans to disband it and built a new organisation based on principle such as on the lines of the EU. I salute all the AU countries such as Zambia, Botswans, Kenya, Nigeria, Liberia, Siera Leone, Senegal etc that are advocating strong measures against Zimbabwe's former president, Mugabe who is now masquarading as Zimbabwe's elected leader. To the wide world, I say Mugabe deserves strong measures to get him out of people and please do not heed the advice of this useless AU organisation.

Dream ooh dreamer! What have you ever achieved with all the abusive expletives you so liberally use on his excellence, the President of the Republic of Great Zimbabwe, Robert Gabriel MUGABE. The man is in power. Even if he died today, the system he has started will continue in one form or another. You really think the Rhodesians and their kin et kith are going to return Rhodesia to the land between the great rivers? Dream OOooh Dreeeamer!

you say "Great Zimbabwe" what a joke. Look at the unemployment, economy, murders, beatings etc. I'd hate to think what you consider a not so great country! By the way you still havent answered my question, why do you support, praise and condone someone who blatantly murders, beats and tortures his own people to keep power?

Oi you !!! You wont succeed in getting brother to fight brother. Even MDC guys who l live with, both my relations and just fellow Zimbabweans, all agree that your posts have one objective, namely, "DIVIDE and RULE" the nation and get them fight a real war. Tell me, how many of us did you slaughter during Chimurenga II??? Of course Zimbabwe has always been GREAT. Why is Britain great, please, remind me.

Whilst articles like this one can be written by journalists in Africa there is hope that the old order despots can, and will be, removed. A free press terrifies the Big Men. Long may it survive!

Believe it or not, The Herald once attempted to stand up to the Rhodesian Front and for a brief period published with large blank spaces to show where the government censors had been busy. They were soon made to change. As much as it pains me to say so, there is at least some residual free press in Zimbabwe although its distribution is severly curtailed. That is more than could have been said of Rhodesia during the Second Chimurenga.

Let me make myself clear here; my 'pain' in saying that press freedom in Zimbabwe is arguably better than it was in Rhodesia is not in any way some sort of defense of Rhodesia. Rather it is a concern that Zanu-pf apologists may use it as a defense of the brutal and unconstitutional tactics of the Mugabe regime. Justifying the present evil with the evil of the past is simply wrong.

Author: Phiri

Katz, I agree with you. Herald reporters have been at odd with the Zanu-pf gang for some time. They try to be as profesional as the system allow them them to be. There is evidence that they are trying to break with Zanu-pf. The chief propagandist on the Herald, fled Zimbabwe to take a writing position in Botswana. So, there is movement and concern for the professionals writing for the Herald. The Herald journalists have won a number of international awards. These guys are no amateurs!

I also sense a frustration on the part of the Herald reporters. The newzimbabwe.com has also written about this development in Zimbabwe. Instead of writing about politics in Zimbabwe, herald reporters have been writing about craze things happening in Zimbabwe..Since writing about Zanu-pf big wigs is dangerous!
