Channel File Size Management

Recently the allAfrica Palm version increased the maximum channel size of our Avantgo offerings in response to requests from readers. Currently the maximum file size is 250K. Even though the increase may not seem large, for some users the increase is significant.

When you select allAfrica.com from your list of channels the option to manage file size and link depth is not available. A work around does exist, however.

Login at the Avantgo Web site as you normally would. Go to My Channels. Select Create Custom Channel Classic (https://avantgo.com/mydevice/create_channel.html).

At the next screen you will see a form. Give your new channel a Title such as allAfrica.com Lite. Enter this URL in the Location box: http://allafrica.com/avantgo/.

For Maximum Channel Size, choose the size that is best for your handheld device. The default is 100 K. Select a Link Depth of 3. Select No for Include images and No for Follow Off-Site Links.

If you sync wirelessly, you can configure the Channel Refresh at this screen as well. Then click SAVE CHANNEL.

Next to go to My Channels. You should see two versions of allAfrica. Delete the original one with 250K Max. The next time you sync you will have a smaller version of allAfrica.

This should prevent you from running out of memory, but you will see some headlines and links that do not work depending on the max file size you set. All stories will not be available to you.
