Liberian Refugees Yearn to End a Life of Fleeing

Over the course of 13 years of civil war, approxiamtely 340,000 Liberians - or roughly one-tenth of the population - fled their country seeking refuge in other West African nations. Among those who fled are some 4,000 Liberians who live in a refugee camp in Oru, Nigeria.

The sixth Sullivan gathering of African and African-American leaders and other friends of Africa was held July 12-17, 2003 in Abuja, Nigeria. The theme, Africa - A Continent of Possibilities, evoked the spirit of the late Reverend Leon Sullivan, who believed Africa's problems could be solved by determined and optimistic addressing of the continent's challenges.

Aids: Raising Awareness

One of the great challenges Africans must overcome as they tackle the Aids pandemic ravaging their continent is awareness. Many people lack even basic knowledge of the disease, how it is transmitted, and how it is treated. A stigma also haunts efforts to prevent and treat the disease, as those with HIV face widespread public fear, scorn, and alienation. Thus Aids education and awareness are particularly important aspects in the battle against the disease.
