The Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art in Washington DC opened a permanent showcase for modern African art Sunday January 7, 2001. "While these artists embrace the artistry of their African heritage," says exhibition curator Elizabeth Harney, "many express a new identity born of exile or the immigrant experience where the international artistic currents have as much influence upon their works as the traditional methods of their African ancestors." Entitled "Encounters with the Contemporary," the exhibition includes more than 60 works from around Africa - view a sample of them here.
