| Liberia's civil war, which ended with a peace agreement and elections in 1997, had horrific consequences for the Liberian people. According to some sources, over 10 percent of the population perished, about three quarters of the population became either refugees or displaced people and out of the 60,000 rebel fighters that were recruited, approximately 60% were "child soldiers".
In June 1999 the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Monrovia organised a major musical event in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. South African reggae singer, Lucky Dube, performed in front of about 15,000 people as part of a programme of activities to help restore humanitarian values in Liberia. ICRC photographer Fred Clarke put the enthusiastic atmosphere at the concert on film and spent some extra time in Liberia, trying to capture the current living conditions of its people. |
