It was all glitz and glamour as the who's who of South African music assembled at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Thursday, April 5, 2001, for the annual South African Music Awards (SAMA). The event, sponsored this year by Standard Bank, attracted the leading lights in the industry and a long list of hopeful nominees -- ranging from veteran singers like Miriam Makeba as well as up and coming artists such as the young rhythm and blues vocalist TK and the popular Boom Shaka singer Lebo. And on hand to witness the other awards, the outfits, the style and the music at the SAMA awards in Joburg was AllAfrica.com's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton, armed with her digital camera.

Above, Miriam Makeba (absent in Mozambique doing charitable work) won Best Female Artist and Best Adult Contemporary Album. Her granddaughter, also a singer, Zenzi Lee(right)received the awards on Makeba's behalf
