The Inter-Congolese Dialogue, established to resolve the four year civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, finally opened in the South African resort of Sun City on 26 February 2002. The problems started on day one and threatened to derail the delicate and much-disrupted Congo peace process. One of the main rebel leaders, and other high-profile representatives of the unarmed opposition, boycotted the opening ceremony attended by several regional heads of state and the secretary-general of the OAU. The negotiations came to an abrupt end less than 24 hours later, with the rival factions arguing over the representation of the delegations.
