The President of IFAD made the promise during talks with government officials yesterday.
The visiting President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development has promised to campaign for more development assistance to be given to Cameroon by his organisation. Lennart Bage made the pledge during talks with the Minister of Plan and Regional Development, Augustin Frederick Kodock, as part of his ongoing working visit to Cameroon.
The IFAD President, who began his round of talks with the Minister of External Relations, also held talks with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Livestock Fisheries and Animal Industry, as well as the Minister of the Economy and Finance.
At the Ministry of External Relations, discussions focused on reinforcing cooperation between IFAD and Cameroon. The Minister of External Relations, Jean Marie Atangana Mebara, requested that IFAD should set up an office in Cameroon. The Minister of Plan and Regional Development, for his part, called on IFAD to lay emphasis on the financing of agricultural activities, transforming agricultural products and extending the PADC programme to the rest of the country.
At the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industry, the Minister called on IFAD to sopport milk production projects, fish rearing, grazing and transformation of fishery and animal products. The Minister of Economy and Finance, thanked IFAD for cancelling Cameroon's debt after the country attained the completion point of the HIPC initiative and stressed the importance of granting microfinance to the rural poor as a means of fighting poverty.
The IFAD president expressed satisfaction with the level of discussions he has had so far with government officials, saying Africa is a priority to IFAD and Cameroon has a pivotal role to play in the Central African region. Cameroon, he said, is the bread basket of the sub-region and enjoys peace and stability in a turbulent Africa. The IFAD president's visit continues today with a visit to some projects sponsored by the organisation in Lekie division.
