THE Zimbabwe Congress of Students' Union held two meetings in Gweru and Bulawayo during which they confirmed their support of President Mugabe's candidature in next weekend's synchronised elections.

The meetings were held at Gweru Theatre and Bulawayo Polytechnic on Monday and Wednesday respectively.

Addressing more than 2 000 students in Gweru drawn from tertiary institutions in the Midlands Province, Zicosu's national secretary, Mr Tanaka Manyadza, said President Mugabe was the best presidential candidate for the elections.

"We met with our colleagues from other parts of Africa who agreed to rally behind Zanu-PF led by Cde Mugabe, a tried and tested leader. We discovered that he was well ahead of other presidential candidates in terms of credentials and leadership qualities," said Mr Manyadza.

"We made a close analysis of other presidential candidates like Simba Makoni and Morgan Tsvangirai and discovered that they had nothing to offer to students."

He called on students to vote for President Mugabe saying voting for an opposition candidate was tantamount to surrendering back the country's hard-won independence to the former colonial master, Britain.

"Cde Mugabe scored (a major) victory when he influenced legislative enactment leading to the acquisition of land from the former settler regime and redistributed it to the landless Zimbabweans. The opposition parties are bent on serving the interests of our former colonisers who were irked by Cde Mugabe's stance of empowering the people through the land reform programme," said Mr Manyadza.

He urged students not to be misled by other presidential candidates.

"We must not be fooled by agents of the West like Makoni and Tsvangirai to vote for them as they are sellouts," he said.

Mr Manyadza described President Mugabe as a visionary leader who always stood his ground in defence of the country's sovereignty against the West's machinations.

"Cde Mugabe is the only African leader who had the courage to stand against Mr Tony Blair and Mr George W. Bush's stance of trying to effect regime change in the country," he said.

In an interview after the Bulawayo meeting yesterday, the Zicosu Bulawayo Charter political commissar, Mr Trymore Mapindu, also confirmed their support for President Mugabe.

"As students we support President Mugabe's candidacy in the elections for his development of tertiary education in the country especially his introduction of the cadetship in which students from disadvantaged families have their fees paid for them by the Government," he said.

Mr Mapindu took a swipe at some of the students who were participating in opposition politics.

"We would also like to condemn some of our colleagues who are participating in the opposition politics because we are under economic sanctions because of the opposition. Those sanctions have not spared us as students and have nullified all the Government's efforts of trying to cushion us.

"As I speak right now, there is some of the information that we cannot access from the Internet because of those sanctions. Taking for example the website, www.jupiterimages.com and other design sites that can be used by computer science students cannot be accessed by Zimbabwean students," he said.

He commended the President for signing into law the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Bill saying it would benefit graduates from tertiary institutions who want to venture into business.
