A group of 12 women who have completed the special programme to accelerate the appointment of women to judicial positions were honoured on Thursday.

The women have completed the Special Programme to Accelerate the Appointment of Women to Judicial Position which was launched last year.

"The programme has focused on exposing the women to the various fields of judiciary work, with a view to enhance their appointability to the bench," Chief Justice Pius Langa said while addressing guest at the gala dinner.

Mr Langa said the justice system would determine the success of the project by the achievements of the 12 women.

"Through the success of this project, the justice system will be able to constitute other project to revolutionalise South Africa's criminal justice system to a new, modernised, efficient and transformed entity as stated by President Mbeki."

In South Africa, of the 204 active judges only 15 percent are women and only one of them is a Deputy Judge President.

Speaking on behalf of the group during the ceremony, senior magistrate, Soma Naidoo told the guest that the programme provided them with advanced knowledge to transform the justice system.

Ms Nadioo further noted that the programme should be introduced to all people who wanted to enter the judiciary because the programme integrated both the practical and theological aspect of the system.

"We can proudly say that, now we are ready to take the justice system to another level," Ms Nadioo told delegates.

The participants, selected from the magistracy and legal private practice, underwent a three month theoretical training and a further six months practical judicial training at the various High Courts.

The 12 candidates will now be placed in a pool from which acting appointments will be made.

"When vacancies occur in the different High Courts they will also have the opportunity to be nominated and be interviewed by the Judicial Services Commission for the position," said the department.
