The Inspector-General of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Beatrice Muna Sieh has warned community dwellers to put a halt to what they termed as "vigilante, or watch night team" since there is no need for such in the country.

The Police boss observed that the physical appearance of some of those who claimed to be part of the vigilante team is even worse than the criminals, while others who claimed to be part of the team go on the rampage and hurt innocent people.

Addressing the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) weekly briefing on Wednesday, Inspector Sieh explained that the Police have organized a community forum to joint work together as a team in combating crimes throughout the city and its environs. She added that the communities have registered with the various Police Stations throughout the city.

The Police Inspector-General also praised President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for the level of support she has given to the Police to perform all if its duties, "even though, we still need more logistics to perform our job. Thank God for UNMIL that is also assisting us".

Giving an overview on the crime situation in the country, the LNP boss boasted that since the launched of "Operation Thunderstorm", there has been some reduction of armed robbery and other crimes in the city and its environs, and moreover, some criminals have begun turning themselves over to the LNP.

Speaking further at the Headquarters of the Liberia National Police in Monrovia, Inspector Sieh, flanked by the Acting UN Police Commissioner / Operations Coordinator, Mr. Idris Ibrahim, with the new operation, said there is no need for community dwellers to form vigilante at night because the new operation also involves the efforts of every citizen in collaboration with the Police.

Inspector Sieh also urged the citizens to report any form of crime or violence to the police for a rapid response and if possible give necessary information that would assist the police in conducting their activities.

She at the same time assured the citizens that Operation Thunderstorm would continue until their aim of putting an end to crimes and dealing with criminals throughout the country is accomplished.

According to Inspector Sieh in the month of April, several cases were recorded, including one case of human trafficking that is pending court trial.

I appreciate this website feeding us in the U.S. with information about our sweet Liberia. This website is very informative, and it is one of the ways i read and learned about what is happening in Liberia and other parts of Africa.

Regarding to the "vigilanete" groups in Liberia, we need to be watchful of what the public is embracing. These groups could somehow give themselves power if the government continues to allow their activities. Since it is still soon, and the country has UN forces plus the national police, it is the bast time to put an end to... [Read Full Text]
