Health and sanitation minister Dr. Soccoh Alex Kabia left Freetown yesterday to attend this year's World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

The meeting will address major disease burdens and health needs for countries in desperate situations, with a focus on HIV/AIDS treatment, malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy and other emerging diseases.

The meeting of the delegations of member states of the African region, organised by the World Health Organization, will bring together African health ministers to discuss the way forward on these issues.

The conference is expected to attract non African Union member states accredited to the AU regional economic communities, UN and other international agencies and would focus on issues relating to the implementation plan for the African Health Strategy, the Decade of African Traditional Medicine, Status on Tuberculosis, and Report on the African EU-USA African Influenza Forum among others.

The minister, as part of his official mission, will be attending a series of meetings including the Emergency International Clinic Workshop in Venice, Italy, from May 13 to 15; the Meeting of the Delegations of Member States of the African region in Geneva, Switzerland on May 17, and the Commonwealth meeting of health ministers on May 18, also in Geneva, Switzerland from May 19, to 24, 2008.

Public Relations officer for the ministry of health and sanitation Jonathan Abass Kamara said the emergency international clinic workshop in Venice was to strengthen the capacity of health facilities and the procurement of medical equipment that are not locally available.

Kamara said the programme has been assisting Sierra Leone in its post war socio-economic drive as well as offering free quality health services to the country.
