South Africa: Four Years After Winning the Bid, Country Has Great Strides

South Africa has made major progress in terms of preparations towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup since the country won the bid to host the event four years ago, says national Chairperson for 2010 Local Organising Committee, Dr Irvin Khoza.
"When we look back on what we have done since it was announced that we were to host the 2010 world cup, I can safely say there has been huge progress," Dr Khoza said on Thursday.
He was speaking at the celebration of the four years since the announcement was made in Sun City.
"We are completing most of the stadia before the end of this year and most of our provinces are committed to ensuring that the roads and other infrastructure are completed before the big event," he said.
Mr Khoza also thanked government for its support in preparing for the event.
Government has contributed more than R27 billion to making sure South Africa hosts a successful world cup.
"I want to thank the national, provincial and the local governments for the support that they have provided for this event.
"We are confident that with all this support South Africa will host a successful soccer world cup," he said.
Mr Khoza said the North West province, as one of the host cities, has also shown progress in its preparation to host matches.
"We have visited some of the areas around Rustenburg and we realised that they are doing well as one of the host cities.
'We also visited Bafokeng Royal Stadium which will be used during the events and we were impressed with what we saw," Mr Khoza said.
The Mayor of the Rustenburg Local Municipality, Mathews Wolmarans told BuaNews that the Royal Bafokeng Stadium would be completed before the end of this year.
"We have made a lot of progress in terms of infrastructure development. Our stadium will be finished in November and most of the work will also be completed this year.

"Our challenge now is to make sure that we start to develop our roads and builds new one to make our city more accessible during the event," Mr Wolmarans said.
