Pupils in rural schools in KwaZulu-Natal have been encouraged to study computer science and technology to ensure more engineers and computer technicians are produced by the province.

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison in KwaZulu-Natal, Bheki Cele said this when he handed over ten computers to Mahlabathini High on Thursday.

The new computers will enable the pupils to put what they have learnt in their classrooms to practice.

"We want to see a lot of computer technicians and engineering coming from the rural schools of uLundi and Mahlabathini.

"We want to change the perception that computer engineers only come from the urban schools," said Mr Cele.

The department has committed to assisting schools with the necessary equipment.

According to the department, the 1000 pupils at the school who were previously sharing 25 computers were eager to learn how to use a computer.

The pupils will now be able to practice their computer skills without worry of the time to move out for another learner to use the computer.

"Education matters do not only concern the Department of Education. Any department can help in anyway they can," said Mr Cele.

The MEC also handed over a bursary to a learner who wanted to study civil engineering next year after completing his Grade 12.

"We want to improve the standard of learning in rural schools, he said, adding that the department will also be delivering another ten computers to Nsikayendlu High school to add to the fifty available computers before the end of the year," said Mr Cele.
