Several people were injured and property worth thousands of shillings destroyed at the weekend, as commuters and matatu crew battled Mungiki members in Murang'a South District.
The sect members had earlier paralysed transport along Kaharati-Kangari road, when they took away ignition keys from drivers who were said to be in arrears.
One of the conductors was beaten and left for dead when he asked for keys to his Nissan matatu.
His rescue
This forced other drivers and conductors, who were also victims, to come to his rescue.
Commuters and other members of the public joined in on sensing that the matatu crew were being overpowered by the sect members who were armed.
The sect members were later overpowered and escaped in different directions during the Saturday incident.
But the angry mob launched a manhunt, which ended at Kangare trading centre, about 50 kilometres from Kaharati, when they burnt down five houses belonging to the sect members.
Kigumo district officer, Peter Langat, had a hard time pleading with the residents to stop the manhunt and destruction of property and let the police do their job.
Shouted down
"Do not take law into your hands. We assure you that we will get all of them," the DO said.
But he was shouted down by members of the public, who claimed the gang has been collecting money and food from them with impunity.

"We can't take it any more. We have suffered enough while you keep on promising that the Government will wipe out the members," a resident said, shouting that Mr John Michuki, the former Internal Security minister, should be moved to the docket.
Can someone crash these morons once and for all. They either work hard like other kenyans or they go and hang themselves period.
And where was Mungiki's Kibaki and Mungiki's favourite son Kenyatta during this commotion? Busy hunting down the Kenyans - such as the Sabaot - who would resist the Munigiki and their GEMA expansionist terrorism.
Where do sabaot and gema meet mr chokora. It open secret that sabaot land defence force is a kalenjin outfit terorising other luyahs and some sabaot clans. It has nothing to do with your nightmare the kikuyus. The only common thing between sabaot force and mungiki is that they are local terorists who do not want to follow the law to solve their grievances if they have any. I am 100% behind the government on crashing both of them.
