Amid growing uncertainty as to the direction Zimbabwe is taking, the European Commission is already preparing for the exit of President Robert Mugabe with a package of 250 million euros, the Humanitarian and Development Commissioner has said.

Mr. Louis Michel says within the framework of the European Development Fund, Brussels stands ready to assist in the stabilization of the country after what he describes as 'change'.

As President Mugabe continues to rebuke any outside intervention, Mr. Michel says the 'ordinary citizens of Zimbabwe want and need the international community to maintain the pressure on Mugabe and his cronies'.

"One of the clearest signals of our intentions to do so would be to publicly commit to a post-Mugabe assistance plan in union with our African partners", writes Mr. Michel in an Op-Ed 'What next for Zimbabwe'.

In a similar tone as French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, Mr. Michel also reaffirms the view that the Mugabe government is illegitimate.

"Let's not forget that Opposition MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai won the first round of elections back in late March. Mugabe and his cronies may like to think that such a resounding call for change can just be forgotten amid the chaos and bloody terror of present day Zimbabwe - but it cannot", he says.

This funding, according to him could focus on supporting hospitals, schools or on the farming sector. Debt-relief is also part of the plan 'to free any incoming and legitimate government of the massive debts accumulated by the Mugabe regime'.

Mr. George Charamba, the permanent secretary at Zimbabwe's information Ministry said yesterday on the sidelines of the African Union meeting in Egypt that the west can "can go and hang a thousand times".

"And I'd remind Mr. Mugabe, that we've no need to shout because even with the country in such a desperate state, the truth reaches the people. The truth is that the international community is ready for action with any future legitimate government", says Mr. Michel.

ohhh, what a great altruism! What a great, nice Samaritan, a vrai bon samaritain monsieur Louis Michel! If that isn't a raw, brute foreign intervention in the internal affairs of an other country, I'm asking my self what possibly may be???

Author: Rayne

How is it foreign intervention? They'll only send the money to Zimbabwe when Mugabe/ZANU-PF is out of power, and it'll go to whoever succeeds Mugabe/ZANU-PF as the government and ruling party.

It's not like Zimbabwe, or any country, is somehow entitled to foreign aid or assistance with the fancy trimmings on its own terms, is it? The European Union and other Western countries don't simply give foreign aid all willy-nilly unless they have a vested interest in that current government, and I guess they're realizing that they don't have any vested interest in Mugabe's government anymore.

Hence, the earmarking of... [Read Full Text]

Rayne,... they don't have any vested interest in Mugabe government anymore. That’s a good point Rayne. I’m wondering why “they” don’t like Mugabe anymore. I’m sure it’s not for his human right record, neither for the violence and the inflation. “They” don’t care about those things. Take an example, Egypt. Egyptians live in a state of emergency for almost 30 years now, the human rights record is bad, Egyptian prisons are full of political prisoners, most of them from the opposition Muslim Brotherhood, the electoral frauds are legendary and despite that Egypt is the second largest foreign aide recipient after... [Read Full Text]

Rayne, promises of foreign aid from western nations are not new. Foreign aid promises are usually the subject of numerous conferences between Africa and the western world. But the truth of the matter is that very little foreign aid goes out to most African countries, even the "so-called" good Africans boys for the western world do not recieve massive foreign aid. Trade and foreign remitance have replaced foreign aid. Zimbabweans send $3billion dollars a year to their homeland and 6 billion rands from South Africa each year. That money is larger than any promises of foreign western aid. The game... [Read Full Text]

These funds will be quickly recovered many times over by looting Zimbabwe's natural resources.

In Iraq, the first country asset to be militarily secured was the Oil Ministry.

A different strategy in Zimbabwe, but the objective is the same.

Haha you idiot, then why is there a problem in Zimbabwe then as there is not the natural resources to support itself without productive farming.mugabe is the one looting the country because he is a thief and a coward! The world sends food aid to the people of Zimbabwe because the word cares about the good people of Zimbabwe. If you think they want to loot Zimbabwe natural resources, why wouldn't they just loot Australia's natural resources as there is trillions times more of them in Australia and it only has 20 million people!!!!!!!

Race.

Zimbabwe and Australia have similar histories. The darker skinned indigenous people were colonized by lighter skinned europeans.

Cde. mugabe has returned the land to its original owners. Hopefully, other african nations will be pressured to do the same.

Question What is Mugabe's Zimbabwe denying the Anglos from having? or What is the Anglos afraid Mugabe will give to the Asians? It is being reported that English and American agents are covertly funding Zimbabweans to repeat the process that they used successfully on Moḥammad Moá¹£addeq, Prime Minister of Iran from 1951 to 1953 when he was removed from power by a coup d'état. These tactics are: using their agents as Mugabiees supporters . while carrying out acts of oppression against all known members of the opposition in the form of. Bombing ,... [Read Full Text]
