ONE of Zimbabwe's renowned novelist, poet and performing artists, Ignatius Mabasa, launched his second novel titled Ndafa Here?, which narrates the relationship between women and their in-laws.
Ndafa Here? is a heartrending story of Betty who suffers in the hands of her in-laws and faces an uphill struggle as she strives to get accepted by her husband and the in-laws.
Speaking during the launch, the award winning Mabasa said the novel, which is written in Shona, explores the much troubling issues of domestic violence.
"The novel Ndafa Here? is based on a story of a young woman, Betty who finds herself in the midst of oppression from her in-laws," said Mabasa.
The writer said Betty, who is the main character in the story, has to endure all forms of abuse from her in-laws and her inner self, following the departure of her husband, Wati for the United Kingdom in search of a better life.
"Wati leaves Betty together with their child, Sunungurai with his parents while he goes to the UK to look for a job.
"While this is meant to be an economic decision, Wati's reasons for going are to free himself from his mother's grip," he said.
Mabasa said to write the novel, he was driven by the unfair treatment women encounter in their marriages.
"The novel is an experiment. l wrote it for women and the issues that are affecting them in the marriage institution," said the award-winning writer.
He also encouraged men to put themselves in women's shoes so that they may discover what most women go through.
Mabasa also testified that it is a challenging adventure for men to stand up and speak about the problems encountered by women at the hands of men.
