United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has donated $7.6 million for the provision of quality, comprehensive and compassionate care for AIDS Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Nigeria.

The donation was made to HOPE Worldwide Nigeria to co-ordinate the programme.

Country Director, HOPE Worldwide, Mr. Yemi Osilaja said in Otta, Ogun State, at a news conference to unveil the project.

He said 8616 OVC and 1723 caregivers from six state are to benefit from the project, tagged Assistance and Care for Children Orphaned and at Risk (ACCORD).

The project, which will last for three years, will see some states such as Lagos, Cross River, Oyo, Delta, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) benefiting from the programme.

Osilaja said the intervention would strengthen the capacity of NGOs to respond toHIV/AIDS in the various communities.

He said Nigerian was now home to a growing number of orphans due to HIV/AIDS and maternal death.

"Presently one million OVC have been created due to this disease. The unprecedented number of orphans is an increasingly visible reminder of the devastating capacityof AIDS to destroy families and leave behind a vulnerable generation of young Nigerians," he said.

Osilaja noted that without adequate care and support programme, there would be a devastating long term developmental impact on the children, their communities and the country as a whole. Also speaking, the USAID representative, Dr Ochiawunma Ibe, said that the donation was to fight HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.

She urged caregivers and NGOs to utilise the money for the purpose it was given.
