PRESIDENT Mwanawasa will have a minor operation to improve his breathing following a routine medical review at Percy Military Hospital in France yesterday.

Vice-President, Rupiah Banda, said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that the president, who underwent the review in the morning, had remained stable on earlier prescribed treatment.

"The president remains in a stable condition except for the need for an intervention, which requires a minor operation to improve the breathing," Mr Banda said.

"The rest of the treatment remains unchanged and Dr Mwanawasa continues to be in the intensive care unit of the Percy Military Hospital in Paris, France," he added.

Mr Banda said the president had a restful weekend.

First Lady, Maureen, and some family members are at the president's bedside at the hospital.

The vice-president said the nation would be informed regularly on the condition of President Mwanawasa.

"I humbly request the nation to continue praying for His Excellency's speedy recovery," he said.

Meanwhile, Patriotic Front (PF) president, Michael Sata, has maintained that he will visit President Mwanawasa in hospital in France once the health authorities allow him to do so.

Mr Sata said he had been in contact with the hospital where the president is admitted and was waiting for a green light allowing him to visit, depending on Dr Mwanawasa's condition.

"Once the hospital decides, I will just inform the Zambian and French governments. I need protection from both governments as I am not an ordinary person," he said.

PF Kasama Central member of Parliament, Saviour Chishimba, also wished Dr Mwanawasa a quick recovery.

"God appointed President Mwanawasa to rule this country for a purpose. We must, therefore, look to God for the quick recovery of the president," he said.

The MMD on the Copperbelt and Luapula provinces has sent a message of quick recovery to President Mwanawasa.

Copperbelt Province vice-chairman, Jerry Mukonkela, said the party in the province was wishing the president a quick recovery so that he could continue with his good work of reviving the country's economy.

MMD Luapula Province chairman, Nsakasha Chibwe, said the party in the province was sad at the president's illness and his admission to the hospital in France.

Major Chibwe said the party and people from all walks of life in the province held one mass at the cathedral in Mansa to pray for the president.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) in Mazabuka joined the thousands of Zambians and scores of organisations in praying for President Mwanawasa.

UPND district secretary, Ben Mwaka, said in a statement in Mazabuka yesterday that the party in Mazabuka was praying for the president to recover soon so that he could return home and continue his national duties.
