ActionAid Liberia, with support from the Kenyan Lawyers Network (KELIN), will on today begin a 10-day workshop on "Rights-based Approaches to HIV Programming" on the main campus of Cuttington University in Suakoko, Bong County.

The workshop is being organized to provide individuals from diverse professional backgrounds the opportunity to develop a joint effort and understanding to fight HIV/AIDS from a rights-based perspective.

A release from ActionAid said, the workshop is part of the organization capacity development initiative for key national stakeholders and partners working on HIV/AIDS, looking at issues ranging from the feminization of HIV and AIDS to the high levels of stigma and discrimination.

Legal frameworks that support the rights of people living positively will also be a central part of the discussions.

The workshop organizers are also guided by the fact that "while the fight against AIDS is shifting from a medical approach to multi-sectoral one, key attention to the multiple impacts of HIV on women and girls and the associated violation of their rights have not formed a core component of HIV programming in Liberia, with stigma and discrimination characterizing popular responses to HIV/AIDS."

This action is based on the recognition that vulnerability, poverty and gender are key determining factors in the discourse and reality of HIV and AIDS. This workshop will support partners' confidence levels, knowledge and skills for advocacy and capacity development engagements.
