Torrential rains throughout Sunday morning destroyed thousands of dollars worth of properties in Monrovia and surrounding communities, leaving several persons dislodged.

Communities in the vicinity of the SKD Sport Complex including King Gray, Kpella Town and SKD Boulevard in Congo Town were affected by the floods.

Water overflowed into several residential buildings and business houses including the CFE Distributors in Congo Town destroying several valuables and goods.

The mango swamp and drainages in Congo Town overflowed as culverts along the SKD Boulevard were washed away, making it difficult for pedestrians and vehicles to get across.

Our reporter who visited some of the affected areas in Paynesville observed that the rains dislodged several persons when water submerged their homes up to window level.

Some residents were seen removing water from their houses, while others were moving video sets, mattresses and other belongings to safety.

"I am afraid, but thanked God that this incident did not occurred while we were asleep," C. Wenneh Singdah, a resident of Congo Town, whose mother house was almost washed away by the rain.

Keturah K. Barkemeni, General Manager of the CFE Distributors, a dealer of general merchandise including building materials in Congo said the floodwater destroyed over 500 bags of cement, carpets and other delicate goods in her store.

Mrs. Barkemeni attributed the flood, which affected her business to illegal construction and chocking of drainages in Congo Town.

"This is a setback for me. How do I replenish my loan? We have comeback home to compete with foreign businesspeople. I can't give you the total cost of what was destroyed by the flood but I have a stock of more than US$ 10,000," She said in a frustrated mood.

Mrs. Barkemeni is calling on the Ministry of Public Works to demolish illegal construction erected on drainages and ensure that large drainages are built.

Another victim, Mamie Teah said the rains displaced her family of 10 and damaged mattresses and other household materials.

Our reporter also observed that two cement depots along the SKD Boulevard were affected by the flood.
