Ghana: U.S. Peace Corps to Work in Rural Areas

The US Embassy has certified 32 Peace Corp Volunteers to work in rural and deprived schools throughout Ghana.
They had undergone a 10-week course in the Ghanaian education curricula, culture, language and social activities to enable them to acclimatize to the communities they had been posted to work.
The volunteers were hosted by respected families in Kukurantumi, Suhyen and Old-Tafo in the Easter Region during the training period.
The Charge d' affaires, U.S Embassy, Ms. Sue Brown, who administered the oath to the volunteers at the Ofori-Panin Senior High School at Kukurantumi, said that volunteer service had kept U.S and Ghana together.
She said "The peace corp service, established some 47 years ago, is a sign of the U.S commitment to helping others and improving the community in which we live everyday".
Ms. Brown said that the many years of uninterrupted U.S volunteer service in Ghana indicated interdependence prosperous future for the two nations.
She urged the volunteers to contribute to the development of deprived communities in Ghana.
Mr. Robert Golledge, U.S peace corp country Director said the volunteers were in Ghana to help develop deprived communities as had been the trend since 1961.
He said volunteers posted to deprive public Senior High Schools were expected to teach Science, English, Mathematics and Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Mr. Kwadwo Affram-Asiedu, Eastern Regional Minister, expressed the hope that the cordial relationship between U.S and Ghana would be sustained and commended the Peace Corps for contributing to the development of Ghana.
