The Pan-African Parliamentary Conference on climate change opened in Yaounde yesterday.
Representatives of African Parliaments have been meeting in Cameroon's capital, Yaounde since yesterday, June 25 to prepare their contributions to the United Nations framework agreement on climate change to take place on December 07-18, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Pan African Parliamentary conference on climate change taking place from June 25-27, 2009 at Cameroon's National Assembly is an occasion for the African Parliaments to take their responsibilities, take resolutions on enabling their governments heighten efforts in fighting against climate change and propose harmonised ways and synergies of handling the problem at the local, national and regional levels.
The Speaker of Cameroon's National Assembly, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril while presiding at the opening ceremony of the Yaounde conference, said parliamentarians must encourage actors in biodiversity to engage in sustainable use and good governance in natural resources.
The Coordinator of the Pan-African-Parliamentary Network on Climate Change, Hon. Awudu Mbaya Cyprian said, Africa contributes less than four percent to the causes of climate change but suffers most from it. As to the effects of climate change, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril said should climate change not be checked now, over 600 million people will be exposed to malnutrition by the year 2080. Hon. Awudu Mbaya on his part cited the results of recent studies which show that at least 300 000 people die each year all over the world from the effects of climate change.
He said should the situation continue, from 2030, over one million people will die each year from the effects of climate change. Other effects include famine, sickness, environmental degradation, low living standards, drought, floods, cyclones and high levels of the sea that could make certain parts of the land to disappear. The British High Commissioner to Cameroon handed to the House Speaker copies of the bilingual Simplified Communication Guide on Climate Change for Parliamentarians and Councillors to distribute to participants.
