GE (NYSE: GE) announced today that it is providing Kasr El Ainy Hospital with GE Healthcare’s latest healthcare technologies for the hospital’s new brain stroke unit in Cairo. This is one of the largest government owned brain stroke units in the Middle East to provide a free-public service to patients. The new unit consists of 34 beds serving approximately 50,000 stroke patients across Cairo.

GE provided (32) CARESCAPE B650 monitors, two B40i monitors and two Clinical Information Center (CIC) Pro patient monitors, in addition to (15) CARESCAPE R860 ventilators, which combine the latest technologies in respiratory care and patient monitoring with expert tools to help doctors provide tailored therapy for their patients. Additionally, GE’s portfolio of patient monitoring solutions provided to Kasr El Ainy Hospital deliver advanced data needed for timely decision-making that can help doctors and clinicians reach the highest levels of clinical excellence.

GE Healthcare also provides application training to doctors, technicians, nurses and biomedical professionals to ensure the new technologies are used according to standards to help build local capabilities and know-how among healthcare professionals in Egypt to drive a better level of care and treatment to patients.

With the average treatment cost reaching up to EGP 40,000; this initiative aims to help in decreasing the number of stroke cases across the country. The main objective of the unit is to treat stroke patients during the first four hours of the stroke which might result in complete recovery and limit the disabilities that might occur with remaining patients.

Strokes are currently ranked as the leading cause for disabilities and third cause for death globally. Research indicates that the average number of new stroke cases reach 210,000 annually across Egypt; with approximately 50,000 cases located in Cairo. 3
