Stockholm, 6 September 2010 - A delegation led by the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group's Water and Sanitation Department Director, Ali Kies, is participating in the Stockholm World Water Week from 5-11 September 2010.

The week is an opportunity for the delegation to gain knowledge of advances made in the sector and share best practices that may be applied to improve projects and other activities; to build partnerships for collaboration with other organizations; present and disseminate knowledge and experiences gained; and raise visibility and support resource mobilization for Bank initiatives such as the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI), the Water Partnership Program (WPP) and the African Water Facility (AWF).

The Bank, through its Water and Sanitation Department, and in collaboration with the AWF and the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW), will play an essential and active role in this year's World Water Week.

The delegation is involved in the organization of "Africa Day" which will be held on 8 September, structured around four sessions: Water Quality which will involve discussion on the invisible challenge for intensifying Land and Water Management in Africa; Country Status Overview and Gender; Mobilizing investments for water in Africa; and a High level Ministerial Session.

The WWW 2010 has become a thought-provoking and engaging event, and brings together experts and organizations to reflect on water-related issues. The aim of the conference is to build capacity, promote partnership and review implementation based on proposed theme and a wide-range of topics. This year, the overall theme is "The Water Quality Challenge-Prevention, Wise Use and Abatement".

The Bank started the week with a high-level meeting with the Gates Foundation on Monday, and will participate in other partnership meetings during the week. The Bank is also a convener and co-convener of some of the most important sessions at the event.
