  • The money will be used for the upkeep of the home as well to support the children and staff
  • Money was raised through fundraising by GE employees with an additional contribution from the company

Johannesburg, South Africa: GE (NYSE: GE) GE South Africa last week in partnership with employees and GE Africa - Corporate Social Responsibility made a donation of R100 000.00 to the SOS Children's Village in Mamelodi East of Pretoria. The donation was handed over to the home by Ian Graham, CFO Oil & Gas Sub Saharan Africa and Southern Africa - & Global Growth Operations.

On behalf of the GE leadership, the African Affinity Forum and staff, Ian expressed GE's commitment to supporting the SOS Children's Village in South Africa and across Africa as part of GE's social responsibility strategy.

Speaking at the event, he said "GE is honoured to be associated with an NGO of the calibre of SOS whose vision of nurturing and providing a safe and supportive environment for disadvantaged kids resonates well with GE's efforts to create a better life for all".

He noted that there is a need to support the development and growth of Africa's next generation of leaders and the work done by SOS provides a critical foundation to deliver on this support. Ian shared with the SOS leadership how the R100 000.00 was raised by GE South Africa staff and leadership through various fundraising activities that were kick started earlier in the year.

"With the generous help of Veronica Nkuna, a number of fundraising events with staff were coordinated, including the sale of raffle tickets, baby pictures contest and a cake and pastries sale. The company donated additional funds onto the proceeds generated from these activities to bring the total money raised to the target of R100 000.00".

Ian's words were echoed by GE Africa's Communications and CSR Director, Patricia Obozuwa who said "at GE, being a good corporate citizen is a full-time commitment. We are pleased at the opportunity to touch the lives of the children at the SOS Village". Speaking on behalf of the Mamelodi SOS Children's Village, Garth Gibson and Lizo Tom thanked GE for the continued support. He said without the help of private sector companies like GE, SOS would not be in a position to provide for the upkeep of the home.
